Teenage Pregnancy: Which side are we?

As a teenager, the rising population of teenage pregnancy is already very alarming. Filipinos are known for its valued moral values but is now diminishing through too much freedom on engaging sexual activities at an early age or premarital sex to be exact. Teen pregnancies should be avoided or else teens will suffer various risks like malnutrition, inadequate prenatal care, abortion, fetal deaths, and acquiring cervical cancer to name a few. Teens are greatly influenced by the people around them particularly the parents who gives direct guidance to their children, school who gives proper information regarding sex educati0n, and lastly, the government who supplies and creates the appropriate rules and regulations about minimizing the continual rising of teenage pregnancy. This status quo adds up to the deterioration of the country as well as the poverty that continues to strike the Filipino people everyday.
According to the World Bank, the Philippines is one of the top ten countries where teenage mothers are rapidly making its way to the top problem of the country which was quantified by the WB as 3.6 million. Do you know that 7 out of 10 women who are pregnant are teenagers according to the http://www.chanelnewsasia.com/stories/southeastasia/view/4? This alarms most women organizations by the steady increase of its number. A lot of alternatives are being brought up to the government with one vision of avoiding teens in being hooked up to sexual activities. But the question that we often ask is - Is it strongly implemented and observed in the society nowadays? The Church has always been the front liners for the movement to be done to save the teenagers from such a grievous act. According to the Church, they definitely oppose to one of the law that was passed and approved to the Senate which was the the Reproductive Health Bill that allows couples to use contraceptives and condoms.

"Unfortunately, even sexuality education is being challenged and opposed by conservative forces in the Philippines. Whether we like it or not, whether parents approve it or not, the young people are getting all source of information from the Internet, from their peers, etc...", Dr. Junice Melgar said which was posted in the internet that I have read in this website, http://womensphere.wordpress.com/2009/06/16/teenage-pregnancy-on-the-rise-in philippines/. There might be a lot of opposing sides with different opinions about how to avoid the rising number of teenage pregnancies. But in the end, it depends on us on what side we'll take, provided with just criticisms and open-minded opinions.

  1. this one is one of the factors that would add up to poverty. One major reason of teenage pregnancy is its basically lack of knowledge. When people are not aware of the consequences of what they are doing then they would probably commit things out of their knowledge. That is why our population is growing big nowadays. poverty is just an effect of the chain of reaction that the past and the current administration, and the people themselves did. Corruption, injustice, unemployment---all of this are the cause of poverty.

  3. every now and then..ganitong problema ay paliging present sa paligid natin. ang panahon ng kabataan ngayon ay lalong lumalala dahil sa kanilang pagiging agresibo sa mga masamang gawain. kadalasan ang problemang ito ay masolusyonan habang di gaanong lumalala. sana ang lahat ng tao ay magtutulungan para sa ikakaunlad ng ating bayan.

  4. teenage pregnancy id really very rampant in our society nowadays. it may because of different reasons. It really saddens me so much since it really brought a big shame to our society, it lowers down our deep gratitude towards the purity of a lady that is very different from our ancestors. We must not just look on this but somehow reflect since we are also part of this and we all need change.

    this is kinda' touching article...

You are definitely right when you said that further education is what the people need. I am convinced that Education is an essential tool for a community to thrive and prosper for I believe that education is not only limited within the perimeters of the school but instead, it is everywhere. As the erudite Mohandas Gandhi said, to educate a child is to educate the entire village. Values are overlooked by the society that's why immorality is rampant nowadays.

    Thanks Earl!

Your comment is very inspiring. As what Mahatma Gandhi said, "If you want change, be the change you want to see". We should start changing ourselves for our own good because in that way, we can magnify others to do theirs as well. The youth of today has been pictured out as the liberated and aggressive generation. Somehow, it gives us an advantage since we dare to make changes especially when we see "too much" in our society. But the sad part is, we dare too much and that we don't think about it again and again which turns our decision into a mistake. Let's change this attitude of ours. Let's take risks, provided that we calculate it every now and then and think about it many times. We cannot point fingers to anybody. Because in the end, we will realize that we, ourselves, should be blamed for the damage that has been done.

    Thank you MicHope!

A Pinay is often described as mahinhin and conservative. But because of our fast-changing society, we try to ride on with its changes as well. In some ways, teenage pregnancies demoralize females more. This saddens me because a woman's mistake is a big deal in the society. But a man's fault is treated as normal and acceptable. Try to weigh this: If a man has a mistress, what's the common reaction of the people? But if the woman has a another man aside from his husband, what is the direct comment of the people? Try to think about that...

    Thanks!

Both your comments were short but crisp. It's nice to hear that somebody strongly says "early pregnancy is a big NO NO to the society..." but it will be hard for us to stop teens in getting hook with premarital sex because youngsters today have all the resources they need in the internet. That is why as what Franlo_Paucis said, we should learn to control ourselves and be patient regarding that matter because there's a perfect time for that. This will definitely sadden Bro because we were taught that the union of a man and a woman is sacred, but nowadays, I can barely see the respect for that subject in some situations that I observe everyday.

    Thank you very much!
